Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup dish. It consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in a meat or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork, dried seaweed, eggs, bamboo, vegetables and green onions. Nearly every region in Japan has its own variation of ramen.
The origin of ramen is unclear. Some sources say it is of Chinese origin. Other sources say it was invented in Japan in the early 20th century. According to ramen expert Hiroshi Osaki, ramen in Japan is said to have come from China in 1872, while the first specialized ramen shop opened in Yokohama in 1910. The name ramen is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese. It is well known that after World War II there was a great need in Japan in fast and cheep food so ramen noodles became vwry popular. The situation hasn`t changed till now. Since the 1980s, ramen became a Japanese cultural icon and was even called one of the most important inventions of the XXI Century.
Now ramen is very popular worldwide. Outside of Asia, there are restaurants specializing in Japanese-style foods like ramen noodles, especially in areas with a large demand for Asian cuisine.
